How Many People Do You Need for Hibachi Catering?

There's no strict guest minimum for hibachi catering — but there is a minimum food total. Here's how it works for small and large groups.

By HibachiLover·

One of the most common questions before booking a private hibachi chef: how many people do I need? The answer isn't as simple as a guest count minimum — it's actually based on a food total minimum. Here's how it works.

The Minimum Food Total — Not a Guest Count

HibachiLover has a $550 minimum food total — not a minimum guest count. This means:

  • If your group of 8 adults × $55 = $440, the $550 minimum applies and you pay $550
  • If your group of 10 adults × $55 = $550, you hit the minimum exactly
  • If your group of 15 adults × $55 = $825, you're well above the minimum

In practice, most parties of 10 or more adults naturally exceed the minimum. Smaller parties still work — you just pay the minimum food total.

Small Groups (8–12 People)

Small hibachi parties are completely doable. The experience is actually more intimate with a smaller group — the chef can interact with each guest more, the food comes out faster, and it feels like a private dinner party rather than a big event. A small group of 8–12 people is perfect for:

  • Birthday dinners for a close circle of friends
  • Anniversary or date night experiences
  • Small corporate dinners or client entertainment
  • Intimate family gatherings

Medium Groups (15–30 People)

The sweet spot for hibachi catering. One chef can comfortably serve 15–30 guests with a great show and hot food for everyone. This is the most common party size we see — birthday parties, graduation parties, and family celebrations almost always fall in this range.

Large Groups (30–100+ People)

Large groups work great — we scale with you. For groups of 30+, we typically bring multiple chefs and grills so everyone gets hot, freshly cooked food simultaneously. There's no awkward wait where half the party is eating and the other half is watching cold food.

What's the Ideal Guest Count?

Honestly, any size from 8 to 200+ works. The most important thing is that your space can accommodate the grill, the chef's performance area, and seating for your guests. Here's a rough guide:

  • 8–15 guests: One chef, intimate experience, ~60–75 min cooking time
  • 15–30 guests: One chef, full show, ~90 min cooking time
  • 30–60 guests: Multiple chefs recommended, ~90 min
  • 60+ guests: Multiple chefs and grills, staggered cooking
