A hibachi party at home is one of the most impressive events you can host — a professional chef cooks fresh teppanyaki in front of your guests while performing knife tricks and fire shows. It feels like a high-end restaurant experience, but it happens in your backyard, driveway, or living space.
Planning one is simpler than most people expect. Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Decide on Your Guest Count
Private hibachi catering starts at a minimum of 10 guests (most caterers require a food minimum — at HibachiLover, that's $490). There's no real upper limit — we've done events with 200+ guests by sending multiple chefs.
Get a headcount before you book. You don't need an exact number right away, but a rough estimate helps determine:
- How many chefs you'll need
- Whether your space can accommodate everyone
- Your approximate food total

Step 2: Choose Your Space
This is the question most people worry about first, and the answer is usually more flexible than you'd expect. Hibachi can work in most spaces as long as there's adequate ventilation. Options include:
- Backyard or patio — the most popular and easiest setup. Fully open air, no ventilation concerns.
- Driveway — works well for larger groups who need more space
- Garage with the door open — a great indoor-adjacent option that works in cooler weather
- Covered patio or sunroom — works with good airflow
- Rented venue or banquet hall — indoor setups work in well-ventilated spaces. The chef brings a propane grill, so no special hookups required.
What you need: enough flat space for the grill (roughly 4–6 feet of clearance around it), and enough seating for your guests within viewing distance of the chef.
Step 3: Plan Your Seating
The hibachi experience is all about watching the chef. Arrange seating so guests face the grill — not with their backs to it. Long tables on two or three sides of the grill work well. Folding tables and chairs are fine. You don't need anything fancy.
For larger groups, one chef can typically cook for 15–20 guests at a time. If you have 30+ guests and want everyone eating at roughly the same time, book two chefs.
You'll need to provide:
- Tables and chairs for all guests
- Plates, utensils, and napkins
- Cups and drinks (the catering covers food only)
Step 4: Book Your Chef Early
Weekend dates — especially Saturday evenings — book up fast, particularly during spring and summer. As a general rule:
- Regular events: book 1–2 weeks in advance
- Birthdays, graduations, holiday parties: book 3–4 weeks out
- Weddings and large events: book 6–8 weeks ahead
- May, June, and December weekends: book as early as possible — these fill fastest
When you book, have ready: your event date, approximate start time, location (address), guest count, and any dietary restrictions.
Step 5: Customize Your Menu
Standard hibachi catering includes two proteins per adult, one per child, with fried rice, vegetables, salad, and sauces. Before your event, you'll typically confirm:
- Protein choices for your group (or let guests choose on the day)
- Any premium upgrades (filet mignon, lobster tail)
- Appetizer add-ons (gyoza, edamame, extra fried rice)
- Any dietary restrictions or allergies
At HibachiLover events, guests can usually choose their own proteins on the spot — the chef takes each person's order individually. This makes it feel more like a restaurant experience and takes the pressure off you to coordinate everyone's preferences in advance.
Step 6: Set the Scene
You don't need to do much — the chef is the entertainment. But a few simple touches make the event feel more intentional:
- Tablecloths and simple centerpieces — keeps the vibe elevated without much effort
- Lighting — string lights or lanterns make an evening backyard event feel special
- Music — soft background music before the chef starts, then let the show take over
- Drinks station — set up a self-serve drink area so guests help themselves and you're not running back and forth
- Sign or banner — for birthday parties and graduations, a personalized sign near the grill makes for great photos
Step 7: On the Day of the Event
Your hibachi chef typically arrives 15–20 minutes before the scheduled start time to set up the grill, prep ingredients, and get ready. Here's what to expect:
- Clear the space before they arrive — remove furniture or obstacles from the cooking area
- Point them to a flat, stable surface for the grill setup
- Have an outlet or extension cord nearby if needed for any lighting
- Guests should be seated when the chef is ready to start — the show works better when everyone is watching
Once the chef starts, your job is done. Sit back, watch the fire show, and enjoy the meal. The chef handles everything from that point — cooking, serving, and performing.
